State Health Department Talks About Swine Flu
Michigan’s first swine flu case of the year was discovered in Berrien County, how concerned should people be? She said pig-to-human transmission of swine flu is rare.
“There are also some very limited cases of these subspecies spreading from person to person,” Bagdasarian said. “We’re looking at these just because we know what the problem is with a virus that spreads from animal populations to human populations.”
Bagdasarian says there are several cases of swine flu in humans each year.
“This has not happened extensively in the past, but we should pay attention to this in the future.”
Bagdasarian says swine flu has many of the same symptoms as common flu. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services says the Berien County case involved a person who had contact with a pig at a youth fair in Berien County. As always, anyone around pigs should be careful.
