UNM College of Education & Human Sciences Adds New Faculty to Key New Mexico Fields: UNM Newsroom

From early childhood and special education to mental health and wellness to physical education and exercise training, UNM College of Education & Human Sciences has strengthened its capacity to meet critical needs in New Mexico and beyond.
“Our new fall 2022 faculty cohort is a resourceful and talented teacher and researcher,” said COEHS Dean Hansel Burley. “Overall, they bring dynamism and help us take our program to new heights.”
Six new assistant professors started working at UNM this fall semester. They include:

Dr. Sarah Roberts Carlson
Dr. Sarah Roberts Carlson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Special Education. She got her Ph.D. She earned her doctorate in special education from the University of Kansas. Her research focuses on understanding the long-term services and supports experienced by adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families to learn about and engage with these systems. Carlson’s interest in research stems from her experience as an adult sibling with Down syndrome and as a transition specialist for a school district in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Carlson was born and raised in Carlsbad, New Mexico. She joins the Enchanted Country and she UNM she attends the COEHS faculty.

Dr. Jeongwoon Jeong,
Dr. Jeongwoon Jeong is an Assistant Professor of Counselor Education in the Department of Individual, Family and Community Education from Fort Hays State University. Jeong graduated from the University of Iowa in 2021 with a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision, as well as a Master of Science in Education Measurement and Statistics. His research focuses on multicultural education in counselor education and mental health/addiction issues for marginalized/underserved people. He is also the treasurer of the Korean Counseling Association International Chapter. He’s already enjoying his new chapter at the University of New Mexico with his family.

Dr. Alyssa Memini
Dr. Alyssa Memini is an Assistant Professor of Athletic Training in the Department of Health, Exercise and Sports Sciences and joined the University from where she earned her PhD at the University of Michigan. in exercise science. Memmini is also a Licensed Athletic Her Trainer and has clinical experience with collegiate and professional track and field athletes. Her research focuses on improving institutional policies to facilitate interdisciplinary management of college students recovering from sports-related concussion. She is particularly interested in the intersection of student identities and how these factors affect the likelihood that students will seek and obtain academic support after a concussion.

Dr. Chelsea T. Morris
Chelsea T. Morris, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of Early Childhood Education in the Department of Individual, Family and Community Education and comes to the college from the University of West Georgia. She got her Ph.D. Her field of teaching and learning at the University of Miami focuses on Early Intervention/Early Childhood Special Education. She began her professional career as an early childhood educator at the University of Virginia Children’s Hospital. Her research focuses on the disproportionate impact of discipline practices and behavioral interventions on young children and their families, and suspension and dropout of young children and preschoolers. She is a Fellow of the National Pyramid Model Her Innovation Center and founder of the Early Learning Center at the University of West Georgia. Currently, she is a research advisor for a multi-site implementation project studying the impact of training. rebound and recoverya resilience curriculum that addresses community trauma.

Dr. Nam So Jung
Dr. Sojeong Nam, Assistant Professor of Counselor Education at IFCE, came to the university from Western Michigan University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Counselor Education and Counseling Psychology. She got her Ph.D. She holds a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from the University of Iowa and has worked with adolescents and young adults with depression, suicidal tendencies, anxiety, and ADHD in both clinical and research settings. Her research interests focus on mental health disparities, mental health stigma and literacy, youth depression and suicidal tendencies, multicultural counselor education, and psychometric properties of tools in counseling and counselor education.

Dr. Victoria Shiver
Dr. Victoria Shiver has joined the University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education, Faculty of HESS. She got her Ph.D. She earned her PhD in Human Performance from the University of Alabama and worked as an Assistant Professor for three years before joining her team at UNM. Shiver focuses on social and emotional learning research, education, and services in physical education and out-of-school programs, as well as developing culturally responsive pedagogies for physical education teachers and teacher candidates. We are strengthening.
