Memphis Academy of Science and Technology Implements New Cell Phone Ban Policy

Memphis, Tennessee (WMC) – The Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering has banned cell phones for 19 years.
The student dean at the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering mentions the new system they are implementing to ban cell phones.
“When the students come in in the morning, they use two devices outside to unlock the porch. So once they lock the porch, they go into the building and go about their day.”
The system is called Yondr and is used to create free spaces without mobile phones.
The Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering has ordered over 600 pouches with five unlocking stations across campus.
The students initially didn’t embrace the idea as you might think.
One student commented, “I didn’t really like this when I first got it.”
But after years of trying to stop distractions in the classroom, students and parents agreed the new system was for the best.
Students say, “There are times when a teacher is teaching and someone takes out a cell phone and blurts out. But since using these pouches, I haven’t had much of a distraction.”
The system was implemented at the Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering for just two weeks, but will be used throughout the academic year.
