The University of Maine Institute of Medicine will host its first annual special science lecture at the Buchanan Alumni Reunion on September 6 at 12:30 pm.
UMaine alumnus D. Allan Butterfield, Vice President of Research and Research Priority Areas for Centers and Research Institutes at the University of Kentucky, will speak and discuss his work on Alzheimer’s disease.
Butterfield is also a British Alumni Endowment Professor of Biological Chemistry and is from Piscatakis County, Maine, where he graduated with a BA in Chemistry in 1968, distinct from UMaine. His Abeta), which accumulates in the Alzheimer’s brain, is associated with the generation of free radicals that lead to lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation that causes neuronal death. His research changed the paradigm for understanding the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer’s disease to include oxidative damage as a key factor.
