Former Historian of Science to Offer UMaine’s 2022 Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Oct. 13

ORONO — Stephen Bocking, professor emeritus of the Trent School of the Environment, University of Trent, will present a 2022 Geddes W. Simpson lecture. Main His Buchanan Alumni Association.
Bocking taught at the Trento Environmental School from 1994 to 2022 and was also its chairman and director for some time. Originally trained in biology and history of science, his research encompassed the historical and contemporary role of knowledge in environmental issues. He has authored about 60 articles and book chapters and has authored and edited several books.
The Geddes W. Simpson Lecture is an annual event sponsored by the Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Fund. The Geddes W. Simpson Lecture Fund was donated by his family in 2001 to support a series of speakers who have provided important insights into the intersection of science and history.
Simpson was a distinguished faculty member who began his 55-year career at UMaine in 1931 at the College of Life Sciences and the Maine Agricultural Experiment Station. He was famous for his research program focused on potato plant aphids. From 1954 until his retirement in 1974 he was head of the Department of Entomology. Upon his retirement he was given an honorary position and continued to work as the station’s part-time editor. David C. Smith, professor emeritus at UMaine, dedicated the station’s history to Simpson, saying that Simpson was “one of his three men whose work I admire.”
