Students at the Tunku Abdul Rahman University (UTAR) Kampar Campus recently had the opportunity to test their fashion creativity.

As part of a series of activities promoting the importance of the 5Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle) held on September 3, we designed apparel armed with recyclable items and presented it at the fashion show. The event, named “R-Show in Kanpar: 5R Fashion Show Design Competition”, was also held to commemorate the university’s 20th anniversary and was attended by 300 people.

Coming out on top of the competition was the duo of Mike Yung and Andy Chu, who defeated six other groups and took home the RM200 and laptop.

Yong said he designed streetwear-inspired apparel, and Choo modeled it at a fashion show.

“I never thought I would be the champion of the tournament.

“I just wanted to share our creativity in fashion enjoying what we do. Winning is a bonus,” he said.

“We are grateful that the judges and the audience liked the design,” he added.

2nd and 3rd place winners won RM150 and RM100 and a laptop respectively.

Audience member Lau Pei Ying, 21, said the fashion show was unique and had great creative ideas.

“It was interesting to see the designers convey their message of recycling while explaining their inspiration and plans for using recyclable items.

“It was a rare fashion show, so I hope that similar events will be held in the future,” she said.

Competition advisor and UTAR lecturer Diong Fong Wei said that while the idea of ​​recycling is not new, it remains important to continue to encourage it from generation to generation.

“We need to come up with creative ideas like this fashion show to instill recycling habits in the younger generation.

“We hope our participants will learn more about recycling, especially 5R practices,” said Diong.

Earlier in the day, 35 Bachelor of Communications (Hons) undergraduate Public Relations students worked with the Kampar District Council to organize a recycling event on campus.

Workshops, lectures and exhibitions were also held to promote the importance of 5R in protecting the environment and reducing flash flood incidence in the district.
