Milwaukee — At a young age, Lynn sat on her grandmother’s lap and learned how to sew. After dedicating herself to her fashion, Lynn Dixion Speller founded the Edessa School of Fashion in honor of her paternal grandmother, Edessa Meek Dixon.

“It is the first new four-year college in Wisconsin to have a program approved by the Educational Approval Program, a division of the Division of Safety and Professional Services. It is the first designated fashion college in the Midwest and a minority It’s the first four-year college in the state with leadership,” said Lynne.

“It only took 100 years. Edessa went to Tuskegee University, graduated in 1920, and the school was approved in 2020,” Lynne said. “She went on to say that she taught me how to sew and gave her a career.”

It’s quite a career. Lynee’s accolades are amazing. She has been in higher education for over 30 years and in college administration for over 5 years. Add to this her designer of internationally acclaimed and award-winning apparel with several museum credits, including the Smithsonian Institution of African American History and Culture.

On September 8th, Lynne and three of her prospective students will attend New York Fashion Week BLK. Another amazing achievement. It may have only taken 100 years, but Edessa, led by Lynn Dixion Speller, is making up for lost time.
