Gulfport, Mississippi (WLOX) – Seniors have new programs to help them on their path to mental and physical health.

Gulfport’s Seashore Highlands use boxing as part of their exercise regimen, with residents throwing punches and enjoying kicks.

In fact, there is no doubt that boxing in the Seashore Highlands is gaining popularity.

Former boxing star turned coach Louis Callahan is behind innovative exercise classes.

“Just seeing the energy here is overwhelming,” he said. “We have students who are 100, 96, 97. Most classes are in his 80s and he’s in his 90s. And they’re moving and boxing. Man, that’s what I see.” is.

The program, which launched in February, is called “Punchout Parkinson’s.” Anyone can participate for free.

“Boxing is good because they listen to orders,” Callahan said. If I say “double jab,” say “jab, jab.” “

The number of participants exceeded expectations and the rewards were great.

Seashore Highlands Executive Director Jennifer Persequino said: “People will be able to go from barely raising their arms to standing up and boxing against punchbacks. “And for overall well-being, it’s not that they don’t want to attend boxing classes every week. They enjoy it a lot.”

Carol Cottone is a resident of the Seashore Highlands Independent Living Zone.

“I think all the exercises we do make us feel better, we’re stronger, we’re stretching… we’re moving things, so it takes some of those pains away,” she said. “And we’re learning to walk better. Balance. It’s really good at that.”

This is a service Callahan can’t offer enough.

“Just looking at their faces gives me joy and improves my mobility,” he said. “When they go to the doctor, they seem to come back happier. And it feels good.”

Classes are held every Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m., and Callahan says the class will continue to be offered.

Because of the success he saw, he added, “Why are we quitting?”
