Next month, we’ll take a look at some of the best nicknames in high school sports, with the ultimate goal of determining fan favorites.
We’re building 12 brackets of 15 teams each, and will be rolling out 3 brackets per week.
We recently released Science Bracket featuring 15 great science-themed high school sports nicknames. Each description is under a vote.

Northern Lights (Deering, Alaska; Shishmaref, Alaska)
A very nice nickname, used by two schools in Arctic Alaska about 100 miles apart.
Midland Chemics (Michigan)
According to Merriam-Webster, the first known use of the word “chemistry” is in 1576, short for “alchemy.” It is also an abbreviation for “chemical”. At Midland High School, Vic, a stuffed lion, is Chemics’ mascot. Makes perfect sense.
Benjamin Franklin Electrons (Pennsylvania)
Philadelphia’s Benjamin Franklin High School is the only home of Elektron in the country. Luckily, Yoko isn’t there to confront them.
Two Harbor Agate (Minnesota)
Agate crystals form in cavities of other rocks in acidic to neutral environments, such as the shores of Lake Superior, where the town of Two Harbor is located.
Saliso Black Diamond (Oklahoma)
Black Diamond is named after the coal mined in Salisseau, a town that derives its name from the French word “Saleseau” or salt supply. Salt deposits along the streams in the area provided the salt that Buffalo his hunters and early settlers used to preserve meat. Traces of old salt pots are still found in the county.
Nathan Hale-Ray Noises (Connecticut)
The high school is noise because the Mudus area is known for low levels of seismic activity. This is meant to accentuate the weird underground grunts.
Purple Hurricane (Fitzgerald, GA; Gainesville, FL)
Hurricanes are completely terrifying in and of themselves, but especially in Florida and Georgia, making a hurricane purple seems like the devil.
University Lab Junior Rainbows (Hawaii)
The nickname makes a lot of sense in the context of being the junior version of the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors in college ranks. But without context, it’s interesting to think that it was named Little Rainbow instead of Big Rainbow.
Ames Little Cyclones, Iowa
Same concept as Junior Rainbows. Little Cyclones is paired with his home state of Iowa and progressing from a college angle, but it’s inherently funny that a potentially catastrophic weather phenomenon is hailed as “small”.
Winter Blizzard (Texas)
The town of Winters, located in central Texas, sees about an inch of snowfall each year. The town’s high school, named after rancher John Winters, has decided to stick to a cold theme when choosing its mascot. You must honor that commitment.
Boiling Springs Bubbler (Pennsylvania)
Boiling Springs is named after the natural hot springs in and around the town. “The Bubble” is the biggest of them all. The Boiling Springs High School Bubblers mascot is a purple and gold bubble.
Hot Springs Savage Heat, Montana
For years, mascots were simply “savages,” but after a 2000 Tribal Council resolution condemned the use of Native Americans as mascots, the Hot Springs Board of Education decided in 2007 that temperature and agreed to change the name of the team.
Johnson Atom Smashers (Georgia)
Johnson High School was founded in 1959 as an experimental school in Savannah, and its scientific connections gave rise to Atom Smashers.

Mars Fighting Planet (Pennsylvania)
There are many theories about how the town north of Pittsburgh on Mars got its name, but it’s clear why the high school chose Fighting Planet as its mascot.
