The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) was founded in 1983 by Pip Hills, who discovered the unique taste of whisky drawn straight from the cask in the 1970s. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society aims to share the world’s best whiskies and bring them to life, making members proud to belong to the most colorful whisky club.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society origins can be traced back to the discovery of whisky in its purest form, which was overlooked by the whisky industry establishment. Pip shared his discovery when experts said there was no demand for it and watched as word spread. The Scotch Malt Whisky Society continues to explore flavours and share their discoveries throughout the year, with a new Outturn for members every month of whiskies hand-picked by their expert Tasting Panel.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society also offers an ever-changing programme of stimulating tasting experiences, such as trying whisky with a beer chaser, unusual food pairings, hot toddy, cocktail, or custom cask-matured dram. Members can learn more about the latest bottlings and share the love with fellow members.
The Society’s spiritual home is The Vaults in Leith, where it started in 1983 in a historic but dilapidated building. As the membership has grown, the Society has added Members’ Rooms at various locations, including Edinburgh’s New Town, London’s Farringdon district, and Glasgow’s 40 Bath Street.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society has a presence in Austria, Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Singapore, and the US. Each branch releases regular batches of new whiskies throughout the year and hosts events for members and non-members.

The Spanish Splendour Whiskey is a whiskey that gives a splendid taste that is as smooth as the highland distillates blended with the fruity and sweet notes of oloroso sherry casks. The first taste of the drink takes you to a world of luxury that has the scent of chocolate truffles, rum-soaked raisins, and butterscotch. The palate is no less indulgent, revealing more of the Seville orange cake which has been made with raw forest honey and the tiniest touch of salt. A drop of water changes the whiskey to unveil the rich, enveloping flavours of crema catalana, with its caramelised top and zesty cinnamon finish. The last taste is the final harmony where Far Breton – a custard with prunes – is a dessert that reminds of Spanish Cantabria. Peat in parts per thousand
The concept of Peat in Parts per Thousand is the best way to describe the features this famous distillery is famous for. Right from the start, the nose is dominated by peat smoke and dried fruits and esters with iodine, antiseptic, kippers and peppered mackerel notes. The more time you spend with this whisky, more subtleties reveal themselves: smoked olive oil, tarred rope, creel nets, and a mineral, sea mist and damp kelp note. It is a perfect harmony of the sea and the smoke and it is an absolute joy to taste it for the fans of the peated whisky. Simply put—gorgeous!
Builders brew, masala chai and chilli boba tea
Builders Brew, Masala Chai, and Chilli Boba Tea Whiskey is a true to its name experience that takes the consumer on a roller coaster of the senses. The experience starts with a floral note with lavender, gladioli and lilies at the forefront. The next change in the aroma is sweet reminding of the taste of blondies, which are chocolate brownies with vanilla. On the palate, opinions among the Tasting Panel diverged: for one, it tasted like the builder’s brew, another saw the spiced heat of the masala chai and still another saw the modern chilli boba tea. When water was added, the floral notes became more of an earthy note similar to that of being in the sunflower field on a sunny day. Finally, sweet honeydew melon, cucumber, and a zingy lime juice were a welcome counterpoint to the richness of this highly nuanced and multi-layered whiskey.
