A question we often ask ourselves is do we have a sense of style or do we really understand fashion? But what exactly is fashion? What’s the difference between those who have style and those who don’t? After talking to various students on campus, I found the answer.

Daniel is obsessed with comfortable streetwear style. She believes that accessories make up an outfit and are the most important part. With fall fashion just around the corner, Daniel plans to wear turtlenecks and colorful jackets to stay stylish even during the colder months.

Wole described her style as depending on her mood of the day and generally viewed it as an expression of her personality. The day we spoke, he had a bright orange look to match his bright and energetic mood when he woke up.

Sam doesn’t like to fit his style into just one word. They believe that anything that feels good is a good piece of clothing.

Urbina described her style as comfortable and relaxed, but also statement. The sides of the are concentrated on the top.

Nora prefers a style that is fun and comfortable. She is not limited to one particular genre of clothing as she tends to rely on wearing what she feels in the moment. She also considers jewelry to be a big part of fashion and often wears a variety of rings in combination.

Liz’s style relies on different colors and mediums. She enjoys black and chain as well as her earthy tones, and she sees her own style as changing daily. Many of her Liz fashion influences come from the queer and Black communities. On the day we spoke, she chose to wear a beautiful handmade crochet skirt and socks, similar items can be found on her Etsy and on her Instagram @zousdesigns.
Every conversation I’ve had about fashion has led me to the conclusion that there really isn’t a definitive definition of fashion. Some people try, but the reality is that fashion has a myriad of perspectives. What is fashionable and what is not is up to you, not anyone else.
