Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) student Andres Guerra’s sustainable fashion creations are bursting with color that mimics mother nature itself, and multimedia influencer Lexi Silverstein (Lexy Silverstein) and wore the design at New York Fashion Week. Silverstein attended the world’s largest fashion event where emerging designers showcase brands that invest in sustainability. Silverstein is sourced from several materials that would otherwise end up in landfills. Guerra’s work attracted much of Lenstime to himself.
“My favorite design in the capsule collection is Las Chamas, a multicolored set made from scraps from my other creations. Sustainability is a core value,” said Andrés Guerra. There’s no better place than NYFW to show what can and must be.In fashion?”
A passionate, innovative and sustainable fashion advocate, Silverstein collaborates with Guerra on design to use and reuse all scraps, scraps and threads to create memorable fashion statements. Here’s the outfit she wore during NYFW.
- A circle skirt made from 7 yards of heavyweight 100% cotton denim from Michael Levine. The dramatic sleeves have flat welt he seams, raw frayed edges and a hood.
- Seven yards of orange tulle and seven yards of purple polyester gabardine (both sourced at Michael Levine) were cut into a multi-layer dress. Gabardine was hand-stitched into a puffy purple skirt that floated over loose-fitting tulle leg wraps.
- Scraps of hand-ripped multi-colored recycled polyester gabardine were sewn onto a sky blue base fabric to create a skirt and top that billow in hot lava colors over bright green long leaves.
“Sustainable fashion is edgy, beautiful and boundless,” says Silverstein. “There is no excuse for wasting money. Young designers like Andrés are showing that creativity and sustainability go hand in hand.”
