Meet the D Factor
The three traits are the basic signs of dark urges, but scientists have uncovered secrets that give us a glimpse into man’s most sinister desires.
A 2018 study by German and Danish psychologists managed to find a common force that drives all dark impulses and named it ‘D’ – the dark factor of personality.
To understand the D factor, you must understand the G factor. This theory was first put forward by British psychologist Charles Spearman. According to the G-Factor, people who do well on one cognitive test should also do well on other types of intelligence tests.

Similarly, “the dark side of human character has something in common,” psychologist Ingo Zettler of the University of Copenhagen told ScienceAlert.
“Like intelligence, you could say they are all expressions of the same tendency,” added Zettler.
How was the D-Factor discovered?
To understand the depths of darkness in the human mind, Zettler undertook four separate studies involving 2,500 people. They measured each person’s dark traits, including egoism, Machiavellianism, lack of morality, narcissism, psychological entitlement, psychopathy, sadism, selfishness, and meanness.
By asking a series of questions, scientists discovered that all these darknesses are different. But at the same time they are united by a central core dark factor, D.

According to Zetler, the D-factor can be just narcissism, a psychopath or a combination of both.
The D-Factor is useful because it helps indicate a person’s potential to act on dark impulses. The higher the D-factor percentage, the more likely someone is to snap.
