Pingree Sponsors Bill Aimed at Ensuring Equity in Medical Education Programs
U.S. Representative Sherry Pingree co-sponsored a bill this week that would “remove barriers and inequities from federally funded physician training programs.”
A bill sponsored by U.S. Representatives Diana Hershberger of R-Tennessee and D-1 District Pingree, Tennessee, states that a doctoral education program would allow physicians (DOs) of osteopathic medicine to become MDs while pursuing degrees. It is intended to ensure that it is treated the same as The University of New England, which has campuses in Bideford and Portland, has a DO program. DO focuses on preventive medicine and comprehensive patient care.
About 25% of all doctors have a DO degree, according to a news release, but there are barriers to being selected for hospital residency programs as students finish their education. Upon graduation and passing the exam, her DO degree will be functionally identical to her MD degree.
Dr. Robert Kane, CEO of the American Academy of Osteopathic Medicine, said in a statement that the bill “addresses persistent and pervasive stigma against osteopathic medical students and Many will be caring for patients in rural and medically underserved areas.” “
“Our partners in Maine have always supported UNE osteopathic medical students, but the same is not true in the rest of the country,” said Jane Carreiro, Dean of the UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine. “Outside of Maine, UNE (medical college) students face housing barriers, such as being excluded from rotations and interviews, and having to sit the MD Licensing exam,” Dr. “
“As one of the fastest growing medical professions in the country, doctors of osteopathic medicine are an essential part of our communities, especially in rural and underserved areas,” Pingree said in a statement. It is ridiculous that osteopathic medical students face discrimination and additional hurdles to access federally funded residency programs.”
