McMurry U. Enrollment Jumps 7% in Fall Semester
McMurry University on Friday announced a 7.3% increase in enrollment for the fall semester, with 1,245 students taking classes.
This is the largest enrollment at the University of South Abilene since Fall 2012.
The freshman class has 277 students, slightly lower than in 2021, but still the second largest in six years.
McMurray officials were delighted as planned activities for the centenary will begin this fall. McMurry was founded in 1923.
University president Sandra S. Harper said: I am excited that all students will be able to participate in the celebration. “
The new major focuses not only on admission success, but also on STEM degrees and interest in the nursing profession. McMurry’s Dual Credit Academy and online classes in cybersecurity, business and criminal justice also helped, according to the news release.
The Community Commitment Program promises that at least 50% of a student’s tuition fees will be covered by McMurry if the student or family is working in a service-based career, another selling point for McMurry.
Hardin Simmons reported fall enrollment of 1,765 late Friday. Of these, 428 are freshmen, 13% are in the top 10% of their high school class, and 37% are in the top 25%. Their ACT and SAT test scores were higher than the new class for 2021.
HSU’s Hispanic enrollment increased from 22% to 24%, putting the university one percentage point short of designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution.
A total of 795 students will be staying on campus this fall.
While McMurry is celebrating its 100th anniversary, HSU will begin its mechanical engineering program in 2023.
Abilene Christian University is expected to release fall enrollment figures on Wednesday, waiting until 12 days of classes are complete. The total number of freshmen classes exceeded 1,000.

ACU Ground Zero to Fund More Nuclear Projects
The US Department of Energy recently announced a grant of approximately $293,000 to be used for the infrastructure of the Nuclear Energy Experimental Test Laboratory at Abilene Christian University.
ACU received funding for the second year in a row through the Nuclear University Program.
ACU is one of 20 university-led projects that have received more than $5.2 million. ACU is one of eight institutions that have funded the infrastructure. The only other private school he was awarded was MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology).
Funding for ACU will expand its capability to characterize radioactive materials, more commonly known as the NEXT lab. It provides the necessary equipment to move chemical operations to new facilities – the Center for Advanced Research and the Dillard Science and Engineering Research. The target opening date for these facilities is late summer 2023.
