Parents whose children do not attend public school and citizens without children should do the same, because parents “are not obligated to pay for public school services that their children are denied access to,” according to Campana’s logic. I can. No interest in paying for public education should be imagined. Of course, this is, at first glance, ridiculous. Our democracy depends on educated citizens who can think critically and act with attention to consequences.
This is why we are happy to support public schools to help develop the next generation of adults. If a parent wants to pursue a certain kind of education other than basic public education, no one will stop them. But asking neighbors to fund these special services with their tax dollars would be silly. Likewise, it is arguably undemocratic to require taxpayers to fund both public education and professional education tailored to the specific needs of specific groups.
