Srinagar September 15 (KNS): PHDCCI-Kashmir in collaboration with Department of Handicrafts and Directorate of Handweaving Kashmir, supported by Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Commerce of India in a series of programs, 3rd Capacity Development for Artisans of Namda Manufacturers on 14th The program was conducted – September 15th at the conference hall in Numaish (Kashmir Hart) Srinagar. The completion of the registration process and manufacturing of Namdas prepared by the School of Designs and the commissioning of specific Bagialimardan machines at the Namda Manufacturers’ Common Facility Center was a decision made by the Director Handicrafts during the programme. It was also decided to hold a joint meeting with experts from SKUAST on sourcing raw materials for Namda and other technical interventions from his NID for design interventions that would help revive the NAMDA craft. Through these interventions, it is ensured that new models can be developed. Due to low quality and lack of skilled manpower and marketing skills, exports of this craft decreased by almost 100% between 1998 and 2008. The handicrafts sector contributes to the preservation and revival of crafts through these capacity building programs and other training programs. The program involved 26 Namda artisans from different regions and craft clusters in the Srinagar district. Riyaz Ahmed Kawusa, Assistant Director of Promotion and Exhibition Department, was also present at Handicrafts and Handroom Kashmir. Qalab Hussain, resource officer at the Designer School of Design, emphasizes topics, the importance of design in crafts, creating sophisticated designs for export quality, developing new and innovative designs and improving quality. We also provided craftsmen with guidance and insight on how to create their own social media platform to post product and skill details. He further taught them the design to create their own catalog and nuances of conversational commerce and trained them to identify digital marketing threats and challenges.
Dr. Mohd Sayyed Bhat from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai explained the importance of packaging to craftsmen and made them understand the importance of packaging especially for handicrafts in Namda.
Namda’s artisans were made to visit the design school by Shahena Bhat Designer School of Designs to observe Namdas new design patterns and various designs prepared and designed by the School of design were shared with the artisans. The craftsmen were told to visit the design school frequently for the latest designs and product quality improvement.
While commending the Handicrafts Department and PHDCCI for their role in organizing such a wonderful enlightenment workshop, he said that the craftsmen had learned and enriched a lot through the two-day programme, learning in packaging, design and marketing.
