Gucci surprises with twins-themed show at Milan Fashion Week

MILAN (Reuters) – Fashionistas doubled down at Gucci’s Milan Fashion Week show on Friday, when the Italian luxury brand wowed crowds by sending identically dressed twins down the catwalk.
Creative Director Alessandro Michele paid tribute to twins and their bond with the show, dubbed “Gucci Twinsburg,” after the town in Ohio that holds a festival for twins each year.
The presentation began with one model walking down the catwalk before the wall was lifted to reveal a brother and sister on the other side wearing identical costumes.

The brothers held hands as they walked together in the impressive finale.
“I am the son of two mothers, mother Heralda and mother Giuliana. Two extraordinary women who have made twins the ultimate mark of their existence,” Michele said in a note to the show. .
“They lived in the same body. They wore the same clothes and combed their hair. They were magically reflected in the mirror. One crossed the other. It was my world, completely doubled.”
Michele’s design began with a black blazer jacket paired with suspender-like trouser legs, followed by a dress with a bright red belt. Jackets were cropped and had big shoulders, and colorful dresses were printed with spanners and bolts.
Models also wear floor-length trench coats, floral kimono-inspired designs, and ruffled silk dresses for an eclectic mix of looks. Accessories included long beaded jewelry and sunglasses, leopard print tights, and snakeskin boots.
“It’s precisely the impossibility of being completely identical that feeds the twin magic,” said Michele.
“Twinsburg plays this game, creating tension in the relationship between the original and the copy. As if by magic, the clothes are duplicated. They seem to lose their singularity status.
“The effect is alienating and ambiguous. It’s almost a breach in the notion of identity, and there’s a revelation that the same garment radiates different qualities on a seemingly identical body.”
Milan Fashion Week runs until Monday.
