GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Ashley Karus Rolls Out Education Plan

Republican gubernatorial candidate Ashley Karus rolled out an education plan Wednesday, calling for public school selection, universal pre-K, and regular testing throughout the year to assess student progress.
She did not answer many of the reporters’ questions.
Asked if he supported attempts to limit teaching students about race and racism, Karus said, “Given the crisis we are currently facing, the emphasis is on literacy and mathematics. I think,” he replied.
That’s despite quoting civil rights leader Malcolm X in the same press conference, calling education “the civil rights issue of our time.”
Asked if he supported banning books from schools, as certain states, including Texas and Florida, have done, Kars said, “The goal is to make sure we can focus. That’s it. [on] Reading, writing, and doing math.” Without going into too much detail, Karus said Rhode Island should look to the Massachusetts education system as a model.

Discussing her plans, Kalus spoke of implementing a “progress-based testing system” that would assess students multiple times a year, rather than relying solely on year-end tests. He didn’t say whether to do away with the Rhode Island Composite Assessment System, also known as RICAS, which tests students annually in arts and math.
If elected, Kalus said he has no plans to retain Angelica Infante Green, chairman of the Rhode Island Department of Education, and is “unimpressed by the progress made so far.” , said he expected to apply for re-employment if he could show the results.
Kalus indicated he wasn’t happy with Infante-Green’s leadership, but wasn’t clear on what to do with the state’s acquisition of Providence Public Schools. It should be viewed as a “partnership” rather than an acquisition, Karus said. Kalus has not disclosed if or when he intends to close the acquisition.
“We will work together to improve results using the paths already blazed by Massachusetts. [Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council] Reports and all reports in terms of what needs to be done to achieve student achievement,” Kars said.
