Online volunteering platform Forgood.co.za launched a campaign earlier this month to raise R100,000 to support women affected by gender-based violence (GBV). Funds go directly to Attorney Against Abuse (LvA). LvA is a non-profit organization that provides free legal services and psychosocial support to victims of GBV.
“Our goal this year is to make Women’s Month important. With your help, we can ensure that GBV victims are no longer harmed by the justice system. By donating to this campaign, you can play an active role in building and strengthening support systems to help women step forward and get the support they desperately need.”
judicial system failure
One of the main reasons for the continued violence in South Africa is the failure of the judicial system in GBV cases. These failures create an environment in which perpetrators of violence are not held accountable for their actions. In South Africa, he is the perpetrator of GBV only arrested in 58% of reported rape cases and only 18.5% of these cases go to trial. Fewer than 9% of these cases result in a conviction, according to a study conducted by the Medical Research Council.
“GBV victims are often further harmed when seeking justice by discriminatory police attitudes, victim blaming, and a traumatic and hostile court environment. For example, GBV victims are expected to navigate a complex and often adversarial legal process alone, which can discourage women from filing lawsuits and expose them to further abuse.” says Rethabile Mosese, Deputy Director of LvA.
Drive systemic change
“By helping individual women get the support they need, we can raise awareness of these issues and, in the long run, have the ripple effect of driving systemic change that will benefit future generations of women. says Helsinger. “The funds raised this month will be used directly to ensure that GBV victims receive adequate legal and psychosocial support. It is our way of saying we have had enough. .
