Selected amidst the captivating ten thousand strong inventory, The Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Vaults Collection covers the best and the rarest of single malt whiskies. Their gradual, passionate, and long-term growing and care have finally come into fruition: they are now freed from their collection of casks. For whisky drinkers, the Vaults Collection means a chance to try whisky from the pre-Malt era including vintages of distilleries that no longer exist.
The Vaults in Leith, Scotland’s oldest continually operating commercial building has had a connection with the beverages world dating back to the 12th century and it is from here that the Society gets its name. It has been packed in a lovely wooden box and the bottles themselves are also labelled, especially for this liquor.
Soothing invigoration
Paradoxically, soothing and invigorating at the same time, the sweet scent smelt of camphor oil, forest walks, perfumes and walnut trees. The remaining identifiable flavours included dehydrated apricots, Italian sausage with fennel flavouring, note of soft leather and citrus which included lime marmalade, lemon curd and orange oil. The palate was choose and smooth, sweet and creamy with measurements of vanilla ice cream, condensed milk, stroopwafel, white chocolate and golden syrup. With water applied came apples, flowers and juice, cinnamon, the almonds of marzipan, and the snap of a battenberg cake. The current food adventures have been dried apple rings, rhubarb and custard, pink wafer biscuits, digestives, tart cherries.

Chocolate mice nibbling rhubarb
It was decorated with little white chocolate mice making rounds on a strip of demerara sugar and toasted coconut flakes while it was accompanied by succulent pineapples and bananas as well as fresh green apples. After sampling a variety of fruits—nectarines, peaches, candied ginger, and aromatic tobacco—the mice finally selected their favourite: stewed rhubarb (Fig. 3). The mice of this color took white chocolate hibiscus, rose, and lily petals that they nibbled after they saw almonds and dried mint when they sprinkled water on them. And after a short check into herbal tea and sherry they proceeded to the field of flavors associated with papaya, kumquat, and soft cream soda. Lastly, they could no longer bear it and decided to sleep on bed of mangoes and coconut rice.
