A new museum exhibit in Alexandria, Virginia, commemorates the women who brought the city’s first permanent medical facility.
The exhibition “Alexandria Hospital: Women Mobilize the Community” was recently opened at the Alexandria History Museum at the Lyceum.
It marks the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Innova Alexandria Hospital, formerly known as the Alexandra Clinic, according to a city statement.
In December 1872, Julia Johns and her friends (who later became the Board of Women’s Executives) organized the first clinic in the city. According to the statement, the first facility was opened on March 1, 1873.
According to the city’s website, the board’s action means people no longer need to travel to Richmond or Washington for hospital care.
More than 40 years later, in 1917, Alexandria’s first “dedicated” hospital facility was built on Block 700 of Duke Street, funding operating theaters, wards, and other facilities, according to the website.
The History Museum’s exhibits focus on women’s activism in hospital operations and attract the support of organizations such as Citizens of Color, Hospital Auxiliary Boards, Twig Junior Auxiliaries, businesses, churches, and schools.
Artifacts on display include approximately 1900 minutes from the Women’s Board of Trustees. Dr. Henry M. Radley in his circa 1960s medical bag and stethoscope, Candy in his striped uniform in the 1980s.
The exhibit will be on display at the Alexandria History Museum for approximately one year, through October 29.
The Lyceum’s Alexandria History Museum, located at 201 S. Washington Street, Alexandria, is open Thursdays and Fridays from 11am to 4pm, Saturdays from 11am to 5pm, and Sundays from 1pm to 5pm.
