Porcupines that are only four months old cannot use their quills as weapons until they are fully grown.
AUSTIN, TX — The Austin Natural Science Center has a new resident: a baby porcupine!
A group of three or more porcupines, Thorn resides in the central, newly renovated Small Worlds Exhibit at 2389 Stratford Drive.
Exhibit renovations include the removal of murals and the addition of live animals for up-close viewing. Live animal additions will be made in the following months.
The real stars of the show were the two porcupines, or baby porcupines, that now live in the exhibit. Porcupines that are only four months old cannot use their quills as weapons until they are fully grown. Barbs are modified hairs that can be removed from an animal’s back to protect itself.

Although these new additions are very young, porcupines have a lifespan of over 23 years, making them long-term residents.
The public will be able to see the cute and glorious Porcupette when it officially debuts on September 18, which is also Austin Museum Day. Until then, allow them to stagger quickly.
