Alabaster Library event focuses on math, science

alabaster—The Albert L. Scott Library in Alabaster hosts many science and math-focused events throughout September, starting with a class on the basics of laser cutting on September 13th at 4:00pm .

The Laser Cutting Course includes an introduction to CorelDRAW software and working with a laser cutter in the library’s Makerspace.

Librarian Director Kim Roberts said the events are a continuation of a thematic series made possible by a State Library grant, “Preparing Schools to Re-Imagine.”

“We’re trying to put an emphasis on math and science and bring that into programming for kids,” Roberts said. We want to strengthen it.”

The 4-H Science Club for Kids will be held on September 15th at 4pm in the Nan Abbott Room with Julie Yocum leading a group of 9-18 year olds.

The Snapseed Photo Editing Course will be held on September 18th at 2pm with Guest Instructor Ted Vodde. Vodde discovered his Snapseed a few years ago and since then using the program he has edited over 20,000 photos taken with his iPhone and used the photos he edited with Snapseed to win a photo award. has been awarded.

Photo editing course participants are required to download Snapseed to their phone or tablet prior to the course. Snapseed is a free app available on the App Store.

The Microsoft Excel 2019 class will be held on September 20th at 4pm in the Nan Abbott Room. This class is intended for those new to Excel. This class covers basic spreadsheet navigation, formatting, and basic formulas.

Space is limited for computer courses, so laptops aren’t guaranteed to attendees, Roberts said. Personal devices are welcome for this reason.

Adults will learn tips to make getting your kids ready for school stress-free at an adults-only seminar on September 24th at 10:30am. .

Finally, teens and teens will have the opportunity to create circuit art in the Nan Abbott Room on September 29th at 4pm. Participants aged 11 to his 18 will discover how to combine electronics and art to create their own masterpieces. Jan Mattingly “The Science Lady” teaches this course.

Roberts also hinted at an upcoming event on October 8th, the Friends of Albert L. Scott Library’s Tiny Woods Festival. Vendors are set up in the wooded area outside the library and host carnival games, food trucks and more from 9am.
