Indianapolis (Wish) — Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has relaunched its Education Equity Initiative with a focus on serving students and teachers.

The pandemic has affected students across the board, especially low-income children and minorities.

“It’s been the hardest road ever for blacks and browns,” said parent Aaron Jones.

In 2020, IPS launched the Education Equity Fund to support students and educators. Jones’ son, who is not an IPS student, says the pandemic’s impact on education has crossed school district boundaries. His son is one of the lucky students.

“My son is pretty self-sufficient. He’s staying on top of it,” Jones said.

Since the initial rollout, over $1 million in grants has been put into the Education Equity Fund.

“As we continue to navigate today’s educational environment while providing quality public education to all students, the work of the IPS Foundation and the Education Equity Fund will ensure that teachers have essential resources and students have a rich and rewarding education. It has a big impact on giving opportunities,” said IPS.

While ILEARN results declined in many districts, IPS and several charter schools saw growth. Jones says he supports this new reopening if it boosts better education.

“It’s always nice to have some extra help and benefits to help people make their journey easier,” Jones said.

In addition to IPS efforts, the Indiana Department of Education recently launched Indiana Learns. This program provides eligible families with access to grants for math and reading tutoring.
