The University of Minnesota was awarded a National Resource Center (NRC) grant for international research and a second NRC grant for African studies. By winning this funding competitively, the university becomes one of only nine programs in the country to be designated a comprehensive international center and one of ten programs in African studies. Funding will come from the US Department of Education’s Title VI program and will total more than $3.5 million over the next four years.

Much of this new funding will directly support students through the FLAS Fellowship Program. The remaining funds will be used for:

• Supporting outreach to K-14 educators.
• Strengthen U of M programs in languages ​​less commonly taught.
• Strengthen the content of international and African studies in the university curriculum.
• Building the academic discipline of international and African studies through speaker series and colloquiums.
• Assist in obtaining library materials.

The Institute for Global Studies and the African Studies Initiative at the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) serve as two national resource centers.
