Patrick Cantlay wins the BMW Championship in style and moves up to 2nd in the FedExCup rankings

After a big struggle at last week’s St. Jude Championship, Patrick Cantlay entered the BMW Championship in the top 10 of the FedEx rankings and had a shot at winning the title next week.
Things weren’t going so well for Cantrey, who hit two bogeys over a three-hole span midway through Round 4 on Sunday. He needed to do something special to defend his BMW Championship and keep moving up the rankings.
That’s exactly what Cantley did with three birdies in the final eight holes to beat Scott Stirlings by one stroke. The highlight of the round was this approach of his 17th with luck at his country club in Wilmington, Delaware.
Patrick Cantley led off the Stirlings’ header with a one-shot before chipping in on a birdie to take the surprise win.
The win moves Cantley to second overall in the FedEx Cup Playoffs, where he faces the season finale next week at Atlanta’s East Lake Golf Course.
Cantray’s 6-under par 65 in Round 3 set the stage for this. Even after bogeying out the round on the 17th, he seemed pretty confident about his performance on Saturday.
“The greens were a little rough and maybe I didn’t have a good stroke, so I’ll fix that after the round and practice a bit,” said Patrick Cantley. “It’s very different to me and things like that happen.”

As mentioned above, the final tournament of the PGA season begins Thursday, with multiple golfers running to clinch the championship.
The win puts Cantlay in second place in the event behind Scotty Schaeffler (third in the BMW Championship). Will Zaratris finished third after having to miss this week’s event due to a back injury. Xander Schauffele and Sam Burns round out the top five.
So far it has been a great season for Cantlay with 11 top 10 finishes, including wins in the BMW Championship and the Zurich Classic in New Orleans. Will he continue this at Eastlake next week?
