ESPN has fired its top NBA game analyst, former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy, according to the New York Post.

Van Gundy, 61, has been with ESPN for 16 years, calling the NBA Finals with player-by-player Mike Breen and co-game analyst Mark Jackson.

The Post reported Friday morning that ESPN would drop about 20 on-air personalities in a bid to save tens of millions of dollars. NBA Countdown analyst Jalen Rose was also let go by the network.

Van Gundy’s exact salary is not known, but he used to make millions.

As the Post noted, “He regularly spoke candidly about the NBA, including his officiating, while displaying a relaxed on-air demeanor that allowed him to analyze the game in depth and demonstrate his dedication. humor with his sometimes off-the-beaten-path observations.”

The Post reports that ESPN and Van Gundy declined to comment and that ESPN is expected to replace Van Gundy on its No. 1 team. JJ Redick, Doris Burke and Richard Jefferson are the most likely candidates.

Last week, former NFL linebacker Rob Ninkovich was the latest big name cut by ESPN.

Front Office Sports says the sports network will not be renewing the former New England Patriots star’s contract. Ninkovich will not be fired. ESPN will wait until his contract expires at the end of the summer, according to the report.

“As ESPN completes its cost-cutting ‘talent exercise’, the network is taking a two-pronged approach. Some contracts for on-air television/radio talent like Ninkovich simply won’t be renewed. Others will see their guaranteed contracts bought out. They will still be paid in full, but ESPN may write their salaries off the books,” FOS reported.
