Science Girl’s Lab educates kids at New Mexico State Fair
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Melissa Ober introduces her science lab to families at this year’s State Fair. At just 17 years old, Ober founded Science Girl’s Lab with a mission to make science exciting and engaging. Seven years later, Ober is fulfilling her dream of becoming a science performer in her hometown.
She started doing shows at Explora while in college and turned it into a business, taking the opportunity to perform at events such as schools, birthday parties, and state fairs. Raised and graduated from UNM with a degree in Elementary Science Education.
She said that making STEAM subjects fun for children and families has always been a priority for the project. “Science often seems like a textbook word to most kids who go to school today, so I want to expand their excitement and imagination. I want to have a great time, make real memories here at the State Fair, and be with my family,” Over said.
Ober talked about her journey to get Science Girl’s Lab off the ground at age 17. Since she started at her early age, she feels she can have a better relationship with the children she is going through. “I get to be a part of the experience I grew up watching science performers, and being able to connect with them on that level makes me feel really great about what I do. I feel great about my job,” Ober said.
Science Girl’s Lab will perform on the Main Street Stage at 11:15am, 1:15pm, 4:15pm and 6:15pm every day of the State Fair. For more information, visit the New Mexico State Fair website.
