ODNR invites Ohioans to celebrate Earth Science Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources’ Geological Survey Division invites Ohioans to celebrate Earth Science Week October 9-15 with a series of activities and programs.

according to ODNR press release, The theme of Earth Science Week 2022 is “Earth Science for a Sustainable World”. This theme emphasizes the importance of earth science in helping people make decisions that strengthen the environment.
“Teaching people about the importance of earth science is essential to sustaining the world we live in,” said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. “These practical lessons are essential to educate and inspire the next generation to love and care for our planet.”
Events on offer this year include geology hikes, Ohio rock talks, fossil tours, and more. A complete list of events is available at: ohiodnr.gov.
ODNR Director Mary Mertz said: “We hope this year’s theme and activities provide the people of Ohio with the motivation and knowledge to become responsible stewards of our natural environment.”
On October 14th from 8:00 am to 11:30 am, the ODNR Geological Survey will provide free paper copies of topographic maps that can be used as hiking and hunting tools.
Additionally, Ohio educators will have access to a limited quantity of the Earth Science Week Teacher Toolkit at no charge. The toolkit includes lab instructions, activity sheets, and other materials for the classroom. Teacher Toolkits and other materials can be ordered by contacting: geo.survey@dnr.ohio.gov.
The ODNR Division of Geological Survey encourages Ohioans unable to attend one of these events to explore Ohio’s natural history at a location near them.
