The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the multiple challenges poor people face in accessing essential health services. The problem is particularly acute in Alabama, where many counties have no doctors and very limited access to healthcare.

Our work with chronically ill patients in prisons in Alabama has revealed serious flaws in prison health care, creating long-term problems for those leaving prison. Many people incarcerated in Alabama suffer from trauma, addiction, and a variety of untreated chronic illnesses.

EJI is launching a program to bring health care to poor and low-income people in Alabama. Our programs are designed to directly address some of the biggest challenges for those leaving state prisons.

Provides free medical services to those released from prisons in Alabama and provides additional care and services to facilitate their successful re-entry.

By providing access to behavioral health services and treatment for chronic conditions, EJI can have a significant impact on the chances of a successful re-entry of people who leave Alabama’s dangerous and violent prisons. I think. This can reduce recidivism and increase public safety.
