Federal Grants Allocated to Support Rockford’s Mental Health Program

Rockford, IL (WIFR) – Tim Nabors has been a member of the Winnebago County Mental Health Commission for the past two years. Nabors believes the first step in dealing with mental health issues is opening up the conversation to everyone.
“Social media and COVID have sprung up conversations about mental health,” Nabors said. “Addressing it will improve their quality of life and keep our community safe.”
Leaders say breaking down the stigma associated with mental health will pave the way for those struggling to learn about the services the government offers to help.
“Mental health issues are a national problem and clearly our community is not immune to individuals with these issues,” said Rockford Mayor Chad Thuneberg. rice field.
Tuneberg said while getting people the help they need is a top priority, there are also financial concerns. Specifically, he wants to make sure new federal grants are coming in for these programs.
“Even if it’s federal, it’s still our taxpayers’ money,” Tuneberg said. “So we want to make sure they’re working.”
Council members approved about $1.5 million in funding from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Administration Monday night. Tuneberg and Nabors agree that dollars make a difference and benefit entire communities, not just individuals.
“If we can give people mental and physical stability, we will have a better workforce and more jobs,” Nabors said.
Rosecrance and Carpenter’s Place are some of the organizations that benefit from this federal funding.
