DOH León acknowledges National Preparedness Month in September
DOH Leon Observes National Preparedness Month
Tallahassee, Florida– Leon County’s Florida Department of Health (DOH Leon) joins local, state and federal emergency response partners to observe National Preparedness Month. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has designated September as National Preparedness Month to raise awareness of the importance of being prepared for disasters and emergencies that may strike at any time. Across Leon County and nationwide, this year’s campaign highlights the importance of planning around a theme. “Lasting Legacy: Prepare for disaster and create a lasting legacy for you and your family.”
“I encourage everyone to be proactive. There are many actions people can take to prepare,” he said. Brandi Knight, MPH, DOH Leon Health Director“Taking steps such as signing up for local alerts on your smartphone, securing and documenting valuables and important documents, developing an emergency contact and evacuation plan, and creating an emergency supply kit is essential for any situation. Here are some items you should have in your emergency kit:
- Water (at least 1 gallon per person per day);
- Non-perishable packaged or canned food (at least 3-7 days supply).
- Medications needed (for 2 weeks);
- Written instructions regarding care and medication, including dosage, list of medical devices to be used, and list of attending physicians.
- first aid kit;
- A flashlight with spare batteries.
- Pet supplies (including pet medicines); and
- Other important documents (stored in a waterproof container).
DOH Leon supports all emergency preparedness activities of key partners of the Leon County Government. “We work with local, state, and federal partners year-round to ensure communities are prepared for disasters. Leon County Director of Emergency Management Kevin Peters said: “But planning is important for families, too.
