Our community has experienced traumatic events. These incidents are devastating, discoordinated, and traumatic. Everyone reacts differently to traumatic events, and that’s okay. It’s important to know that your reactions are normal and may not be the same as your friends and family. Giving yourself time is important. You will need immediate and short-term support as well as long-term support to access resources and healing.
Short-term and long-term support
- The first thing to consider is making sure our own basic needs are met. So the concept of putting on an oxygen mask first. Are you eating nutritious food and drinking water? Are you able to get the rest and shelter you need? If you notice any significant changes in your mood, behavior, thoughts, sleep patterns or habits, contact your support system or visit one of the supports listed below. Please consider

For example, activities such as doing laundry, showering, and taking medicine so that everyone in the family has clean clothes. Prescriptions, bill payments, and even tooth brushing. Or it could be listening to music, creating art, taking a walk, meditating, or taking a deep breath.
- In addition to beneficial and supportive self-care behaviors, it is important to be aware of unhelpful behaviors and behaviors, such as overindulging in destructive things, engaging in risky behaviors, and using substances.

- Pilot Butte Middle School’s drop-in center Onsite, one-on-one or in small groups to support those in the community who feel they need help. It is staffed by pastors and behavioral health staff from St. Charles and Deschutes counties, all trained in critical incident response strategies.
