Long flight to the Women’s World Cup? American players have a plan for this
By Anne M. Patterson AP Sports Writer
Midfielder Andi Sullivan plans to take a nap. Defender Emily Fox intends to stick with the football theme and finally watch ‘Ted Lasso’.
The US national team – like most other teams – faces a long flight to the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.
Already seasoned travelers, Americans have strategies to pass the time. And they will certainly need this tactic: the flight to New Zealand, where they will pass the group stage of the tournament, lasts 12 hours.
“I need suggestions!” midfielder Kristie Mewis has gushed about the shows she plans to upload for the flight. “Honestly, I’m re-watching ‘Suits’ right now. I love the ‘suits’.
Once there, players will retire to a self-imposed bubble where they will block out noise and distractions for approximately seven weeks. Most stay off social media platforms for the duration.
Forward Trinity Rodman, making her World Cup debut, is taking advice from the veterans. Rodman’s father is former NBA star Dennis Rodman, so she’s getting a lot of attention just because of her name.
“They’ve been very open about making sure you have entertainment and ways to distract yourself outside of your phone and social media because I think with social media you can be consumed and you can definitely get caught up in it,” Rodman said. “But I think I find those ways to self-isolate, find hobbies in the hotel room: coloring, journaling, reading, Fortnite. I’m a bit of a gamer, so this definitely helped me enjoy relaxing.
The United States takes on Wales in a send-off match on Sunday in San Jose, California. That same night, they will fly to training camp in New Zealand.
The World Cup will begin on July 20. The United States will start with a match against Vietnam on July 22.
