The commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Revenue will leave the agency next month for a role at the Minnesota Museum of Science.

On Wednesday, Gov. Tim Waltz’s office announced that Robert Doughty will become the museum’s chief financial officer, stepping down from his current role on Sept. 2.

Doty was appointed by Walz in November 2020. Even after he leaves, he will continue to serve as an advisor, his Walz office said.

“Commissioner Doughty truly embodies what it means to be a civil servant,” Waltz said. “We owe many of the state’s greatest achievements over the past few years to his dedication and work. He has played a key role in growing our thriving economy, and we look forward to what Robert does next and are grateful to have him as an advisor.”

Vice Chairman Lee Ho will serve as a temporary member until the end of the year after Mr. Doty retires.

“I am grateful to Governor Waltz and Lt. Governor Flanagan for giving me the opportunity to serve as commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Revenue,” Doty said in a statement. I am truly honored to have made an impact, and I am proud of the work accomplished during my tenure at Revenue, especially the program that provided relief to the people of Minnesota during the pandemic 19 Tribal Relations Grant, and now Paying frontline workers and working to instill equity in the work of tax administration and the creation of the Public Engagement Authority. I will forever be grateful for the hard work, dedication and support of the company.

Previously, he served as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Minneapolis Public Schools and served as Executive Director of the Minnesota Lottery before joining the Revenue Service as Vice Chairman in 2019.
