Workforce Solutions of West Central Texas was recently awarded approximately $1.2 million in grants from the US Department of Education to improve post-secondary career education for rural students.
Workforce Solutions said in a news release that the funding will be available over three years and will be used to help students find jobs in high-demand, high-paying jobs. Funding-supported programs include career awareness initiatives for middle and high school students, college and career advice for seniors, and job-based learning opportunities.
The grant is being implemented in collaboration with Cisco College, Hardin-Simmons University, McMurry University, and other institutions of higher education, with support from employers in industries such as manufacturing and healthcare, the release said. says.
The grant will be announced at a ceremony on Wednesday.
ACU Establishes Married Family Center Honoring Mr. and Mrs. Faulkner
Abilene Christian University on Friday announced the Paul and Gladys Faulkner Center for Marriage and Family.
The facility is named after the late Paul Faulkner, who enriched his marriage over the years through counseling with his college friend Carl Breshen. Faulkner, a preacher, author, professor and counselor, died on July 5 at the age of 92.
His wife passed away in 2016.
The center will offer speakers, events, and resources for ACU, Abilene “and beyond,” according to a news release. Part of it will be covered by donations.
It will become part of the ACU Department of Marriage and Family Studies at the University of Biblical Studies.
Faulkner and Brechen founded the Marriage Enhancement Seminar. Seminars have been conducted in 33 states and her 7 countries over 32 years.

Tarleton Seeks PhD in Animal and Natural Resources
Tarleton State University announced Wednesday that it recently received approval from the Texas A&M University System Board of Trustees to seek final approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for its doctoral degree program in animal and natural resource sciences.
The 60-hour program will be Tarleton’s fourth doctoral program and the first at the University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the university said in a news release.
“This is a huge win for Tarleton and the global community,” said Dr. Diane Stearns, Tarleton’s Dean and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs, in a release. “Food demand alone is expected to increase by at least 2.5 times by 2050 as the world’s population approaches her 10 billion.”

Opens Child Development Center in Tarleton
Tarleton recently celebrated the opening of its new Child Development Center and Tarleton Child Welfare Center, the school said in a news release.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on Thursday at the new facility, formerly Moody Hall.Moody was built in 1936 as an on-campus girls’ dormitory and later offered a variety of children’s services.
The renovations include a reception area, four classrooms, a learning lab, an indoor activity center, an outdoor playground, food service areas, and new security features.
Regional Music Students Win State Awards
The Texas Music Teachers Association recently recognized high school graduates for their participation in TMTA activities and presented Student Affiliate Senior Participation Awards to several students in the Abilene area.
Sherry Flash student Tommy Thomas was named the state champion for earning the most participation points in grades 1-12. Thomas was the 2022 Wiley High School valedictorian.

Junior Achievement of Abilene recently announced scholarships worth $41,000 to 12 local high school students pursuing higher education.
The scholarship, presented at the JA Scholarship Reception on July 21st, was made in partnership with First Financial Trust & Asset Management Company and the Willie I., Wanda, WF Martin Charitable Trust Fund managed by Abilene Christian University. .
