McCarthy Building Companies $13.6 million state-of-the-art science complex completed A project at South Mountain Community College (SMCC). This includes a new 19,000-square-foot physics and life sciences building and complete renovations of two existing buildings. The Science Complex will launch STEM programs and lab sessions in Spring 2023.

The Science Complex includes a variety of newly updated science labs, experimental support spaces, a new cadaver lab, faculty rooms, and informal learning spaces. The cadaver lab represents a much-needed facility addition for faculty and students pursuing degrees in the healthcare field.

“Our students deserve a place to pursue their dreams of becoming engineers, scientists and medical professionals,” said Dr. Shari Olson, President of SMCC. “The South Phoenix community needed this new facility. We are providing a facility with the latest technology and labs to help students pursue the careers they want.”

As part of the renovation, new structural connections were made to join the two existing physical sciences and life sciences buildings, and the botanical garden was relocated. The fusion of these two buildings and the addition of the new building will create the new South Mountain Community College Science Complex. The facility is intended to attract and prepare future his STEM students and will serve her 5,000 students on campus.

Gensler served as the design architect and archivist for this project. The new SMCC Science Complex features new classroom technology and labs by integrating a “forward-looking” floor plan and contemporary look with lab support areas, faculty offices and creative learning spaces.

Key trading partners for this project include Urban Energy Solutions Inc., S&H Steel, Wholesale Floors, SKF Tile & Stone, Gothic Landscape, Marks Valley Grading and Kinkaid Civil Construction.

McCarthy is also working closely with SMCC to launch the Building Contractors Association in the fall of 2020. This provides the student with his first semester certificate in assembly and carpentry, electrical or plumbing trades. This collaboration aims to increase the number of skilled craftsmen seeking construction jobs in the state. According to Build Your Future Arizona, a Greater Phoenix Chamber Foundation project, Arizona will need 228,000 craft professionals by December 2024, with craft professionals averaging more than recent college graduates annually.
