UAMS Dr. Ashley Nemec-Bakk Awarded Postdoctoral Fellowship in Space Health Research

| | Dr. Ashley Nemec-Bakk is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Radiation Health Division and Department of Pharmacy in the UAMS School of Pharmacy and the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor College of Medicine.
TRISH is supported by NASA’s Human Research Program and part of its mission is to support the upcoming Artemis mission to send the first woman and the first man of color to the Moon. The Institute funds innovative and disruptive research that can improve and protect human health and safety wherever humans explore.
“Developing the next generation of space health researchers is one of our strategic goals,” said Dr. Dorit Donoviel, Executive Director of TRISH. “We aim to prepare a diverse workforce with different scientific backgrounds to help solve the challenges facing spacecraft on future missions to the moon and beyond. We are excited to welcome this next postdoc, as they will help bring us closer to that goal.”
“We are thrilled to be working with TRISH,” said Nemec-Bakk. “This funding will enable us to investigate the cardiovascular effects of simulated space environments. It helps us decide if such measures are appropriate.”
Nemec-Bakk joins two other researchers in a new fellowship cohort supported by the TRISH Academy of Bioastronautics, which provides two years of research funding. Drawing on her research background in the effects of heavy ion radiation on the cardiovascular system, she used her two new ground-based models of deep space travel to explore how radiation and microgravity affect the heart, major arteries, and blood vessels. Nemec-Bakk received an MS in Free Radical Biology in 2016 and a PhD in Radiation-induced Fetal Programming in 2020 from Lakehead University, Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. Joined UAMS in January 2021.
Led by the Space Medicine Center at Baylor College of Medicine, TRISH is a consortium that includes the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. NASA recently gave the Institute her six Awarded an annual extension.
