Ishpeming, Michigan (WLUC) – The West End Health Foundation recently awarded $30,000 for the 2022 Proactive Grants Cycle. The Proactive Grant Program was limited to programs and services developed to address youth health with a focus on mental health. Three applications were funded based on a competitive review of the organization, program, and quality of the proposal.

The following grants were awarded.

Ishpeming Public School District will receive $15,250 to provide a mental health and suicide awareness program featuring Kevin Hines.

Hines is a suicide survivor and has dedicated her life to educating audiences about mental health and suicide prevention. Since attempting suicide in September 2000 by jumping off Golden Gate’s bridge, he has been busy sharing his story through face-to-face presentations and a documentary titled “Suicide: The Ripple Effect.” doing. He also wrote a memoir titled “After a suicide attempt, I survived, thrived, and cracked unbroken.” The grant will be used to host Hines in Ishpeming, Negawny, Westwood, and Republic programs for students in his Michigan school district.

Great Lakes Recovery Centers received $9,190 to enhance access to mental health services by increasing the hours offered at its specialty child and adolescent psychiatric clinic in Negauni.

The grant will provide behavioral health services to an additional 115 young people and their families. The range of services that may be offered to these clients includes trauma-focused cognitive-behavioral therapy, individual and play therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and family therapy, depending on each individual’s needs. It is included.

The Ishpeming Cancer Society, also known as Marquette County Cancer Care, will receive $5,560 to help meet the mental health needs of young cancer patients.

Founded in 1979, the Ishpeming Cancer Society helps Marquette County residents diagnosed with cancer. The organization provides financial assistance for treatment, medication, travel, equipment and supplies for cancer patients. The organization also serves as a support network for cancer patients and their families.

Amy Crickner, Chairman of the West End Foundation’s Philanthropy Committee, said: “After receiving and carefully considering 10 proposals requesting more than $80,000, the Board determined that the programs offered by these three organizations would most positively impact local youth. , we are fortunate to have dedicated professionals in place to help young people cope with the challenges they face today.”

In addition to the Proactive Grant Award, the West End Health Foundation presented a check for $15,200 to the Upper Peninsula Diabetes Outreach Network for the 2022 Teal Lake Swim.

The Foundation is proud to provide matching fund support for the Swim Teal Lake Benefit for Diabetes since 2014. UPDON is committed to ensuring the availability of cost-effective diabetes prevention, detection, treatment, supplies and support services, promoting diabetes education, strengthening collaboration and promoting diabetes to prevent complications. We maintain coalitions across the UP and work with healthcare to identify and address service gaps. Professionals who enhance their knowledge of diabetes treatment and care delivery.
