The two-day Climate Action Africa Forum 2024, tagged CAAF24, held in Lagos from Wednesday, June 19 to June 20, 2024, came to a graphic end at the Lekki Conservation Centre, Lekki in Lagos on Thursday, June 20, 2024, with the flagging off the One Billion Tree Planting Initiative of the Climate Action Africa by Dr Oby Ezekwesili, Former Nigerian Minister of Education and Her Excellency, Ramatoulaye Diallo Ndiaye, former Malian Minister of Culture, Handcraft and Tourism, and now the CEO of Great Green Wall of Africa.

The One Billion Tree Planting Initiative is an initiative of the Climate Action Africa aimed at planting one Billion trees across the African continent, to fight the negative effects of climate change and environmental degradation.

The Executive Director of Climate Action Africa, the organisers of CAAF24, Grace Oluchi Mbah, in her opening remark, stressed the importance of planting the right kind of trees for a particular environment to get the right result, as the kind of tree to plant varies from place to place, which entailed the collaboration of the Climate Action Africa organisation with the Nigerian Conservation Foundation and the Lekki Conservation Centre on the tree planting initiative.

In her keynote address, Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, who was the Chairperson of the occasion, praised the One Billion Tree Planting Initiative of Climate Action Africa as an audacious and bold step and promised to continue to give her support to it.

Her Excellency, Ramatoulaye Diallo Ndiaye, also praised the initiative and determination of the Climate Action Africa organisation to embark on the One Billion Tree Planting Initiative.

The activities of the day included a 15-minute guided walk through the conserved forest located at the Lekki Conservation Centre, where animals like monkeys, crocodiles, alligators, etc., are still living in their natural habitat, surrounded by the hustle and bustle of Lagos. The 15-minute walk ended at a grassland, also within the forest on the premises of the Lekki Conservation Centre.

Trees were thereafter planted by Dr. Oby Ezekwesili, her husband Pastor Chinedu Ezekwesili, H.E. Ramatoulaye Diallo Ndiaye and other attendees at the event.

With the flag-off event now done with, the tree-planting exercise will continue at some places in Nigeria and across the African continent.
