5K Run Raises Mental Health Awareness Among Police Officers
East Hartford, Connecticut (WFSB) – In March 2013, East Hartford police officer Paul Buchanan committed suicide.
Since then, 5k in Town has paid tribute to Buchanan, raising funds and awareness of mental health among police officers.
“It’s still a taboo subject that no one wants to talk about,” said one participant.
But the runners of this event want to talk about it.
They are friends and family of former East Hartford officer Paul Buchanan.
“He was the best.
After Paul’s death, his wife of 29 years, Trish, launched an annual 5K run to raise funds and raise awareness of mental health among police officers.
It’s called Believe 208: 5k Run for the Bravest and Finest.
208 was Paul’s badge number at the East Hartford Police Department.
Eight years later, 5k has a huge following and following.
Paul is not the only officer of honor today.
Near the start line is a memorial with photographs of Connecticut first responders who have also committed suicide in recent years.
There is a rose in the middle of the monument.
Criminal Justice Professor Katie Kleis is today’s Race Director.
“Job wear and tear. First responders are exposed to a lot of tragedy on a daily basis, and it accumulates over the course of their careers,” Kreis said. “There are resources available. Ask for help.” does not mean weakness.”
“We need to talk about it, be open about it and make a difference,” said Trish.
Resources include wellness conferences and support training.
